NGERULMUD, REPUBLIC OF PALAU  –  Senate President Camsek Elias Chin called the Seventeenth Day of the Senate’s 5th Regular Session to order at  1:18  p.m.  on  Thursday,  January 30, 2014 with all Senators present.

The Tropical Disturbance located roughly 280mi E-SE of Palau moving West at 15mph with winds of 17-23mph.

It is currently a subject of a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert (TFCA) by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) it may upgrade to a Tropical Cyclone in less than 24 hours. 

Remember the different categories of Tropical Cyclones based on the intensity of the maximum sustained winds (MSW)?  Here it is again:

 No changes to the forecast unless the Tropical Disturbance delays exiting our waters.  Majority of next week leans towards the dry side with just short bursts of moderate to heavy showers due to converging trade winds.

 Wind:
Today=North 12-23mph with gusts to 35mph shifting to northwest this afternoon with combined seas of 10-12ft.
Tonight=West wind 6-17mph with combined seas of 9-11ft. 

Friday=Southwest wind 12-17mph with combined seas of 8-10ft.
Friday night=Southeast wind 12-17mph with combined seas of 7-9ft. 

Saturday=East wind 12-17mph with combined seas of 6-8ft.
Sunday and Monday=Northeast wind 12-17mph with combined seas of 6-8ft. 

 

Temperatures:  Highs in the mid 80s and overnight lows in the mid 70s.

...DEVELOPING TROPICAL DISTURBANCE MOVING WEST ACROSS YAP STATE...

A TROPICAL DISTURBANCE IS CENTERED AT APPROXIMATELY 10N142E...WHICH 
IS ABOUT 250 MILES EAST OF YAP AND 530 MILES EAST-NORTHEAST OF KOROR 
PALAU. THIS DISTURBED WEATHER IS MOVING SLOWLY TOWARD THE WEST AND 
IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP SLOWLY IN THE COMING DAYS.

ATOLLS AND ISLANDS THAT COULD BE AFFECTED BY THIS DISTURBANCE 
INCLUDE YAP...FAIS...ULITHI AND NGULU OF YAP STATE...AND 
KAYANGEL...BABELDOAB AND KOROR IN THE REPUBLIC OF PALAU. 

HEAVY RAIN SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS EXTEND NORTHEASTWARD 
FROM NORTHEAST OF KOROR...ACROSS YAP STATE TO THE MARIANAS. 
SCATTERED HEAVY SHOWERS WITH WIND GUSTS OF 25 TO 30 MPH WILL 
CONTINUE TO AFFECT YAP STATE THROUGH THURSDAY AND WILL REACH THE 
REPUBLIC OF PALAU THIS EVENING AND CONTINUE THROUGH THE NEXT DAY OR 
TWO. ADDITIONAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 3 TO 5 INCHES OR MORE ARE LIKELY.

BE AWARE THAT STREAMS ON HIGH ISLANDS OF PALAU COULD BECOME FLOODED 
AND DANGEROUS...AND THE RISK OF MUD SLIDES WILL INCREASE AS WELL AS 
THE POTENTIAL FOR DANGEROUS LIGHTNING. 

RESIDENTS OF YAP STATE AND THE REPUBLIC OF PALAU ARE ADVISED TO 
MONITOR LATEST WEATHER INFORMATION. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS FROM YOUR 
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICES...LOCAL WEATHER OFFICES AND RADIO 
STATIONS.

On January 20, First Lady Debbie Remengesau presented to the students of Ngarchelong Elementary School and Ngaraard Elementary School their brand new outdoor play-house set with swings and slide. The school playhouse project is the first Lady’s initiative to encourage fun interaction and physical activity among our youngest students.  Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs, Baklai Temengil-Chilton accompanied the First Lady at the presentations as her ministry collaborated with the project. Also accompanying the First Lady, was Education Specialist, Jubilee Kuartei of the MOE School Management Division.
