On December 18, 2014, Dr. Yimnng Golbuu, CEO of Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) and Dr. Patrick Tellei, President of Palau Community College (PCC), signed the memorandum of collaboration to finalize the arrangements for the merging of PICRC’s and PCC’s DNA laboratories into one joint DNA laboratory.
A new combined state-of-the-art DNA laboratory is housed at Palau Community College campus. Having the DNA lab at PCC will allow for a better exchange and interactions between researchers at the lab and students at PCC. The lab will not only be used for research but it will serve as a teaching lab, where students will be able to learn the latest techniques and molecular tools that are used for biodiversity research.
The DNA lab will focus on using molecular tools to assess Palau’s biodiversity, especially among the poorly studied groups of marine animals. DNA technology known as ‘barcoding’ is a new technology in the field of taxonomy, as opposed to the more traditional taxonomy that focuses on behavior and physical traits. Using this DNA technology will provide more accurate and faster assessment of Palau’s biodiversity. Assessing biodiversity is important because it will identify high priority areas with high diversity that deserves special attention and management. This is a major achievement for the PICRC, PCC and for Palau to have such an advanced laboratory in the country.
The establishment of joint DNA lab, outfitted with over $100,000 worth of equipment, was made possible by a joint collaborative research project between PICRC, PCC and University of the Ryukyus (UoR) in Okinawa, Japan, that is funded by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The focus of the joint collaborative research is to conduct studies that will provide information that can be used to make policy in the face of climate change. Biodiversity and climate change are interconnected, as biodiversity is affected by increasing ocean temperatures, sea level rise, coastal erosion and other climate change impacts. On the other hand, biodiversity, through the ecosystem services it supports, also makes an important contribution to both climate change adaptation and mitigation.
The establishment of the DNA lab demonstrates the advancement of PICRC’s research capacity and its continued contribution to coral reef science. This highlights two of PICRC’s top objectives, to improve understanding of Palau’s marine environment to support its conservation and management and to build local capacity in new areas of research.
