medical marijuanaTwo lawmakers, Delegate Lucio Ngiraiwet and Delegate Masasinge Arurang, introduced a proposed law that will make it legal to use marijuana for medical purposes, on June 10, 2014. Supporting statement of the authors “Marijuana should be treated like any other medicine owing to its healing power”. With research, “Doctors and medical science around the world have found that marijuana an effective treatment for suffering caused by debilitating medical conditions, including cancer, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, post-traumatic stress disorder, epilepsy, positive status of HIV/AIDS, rheumatoid arthritis or similar chronic autoimmune deficiency syndrome, and damage to the nervous tissue of the spinal cord, with objective neurological indication of intractable spasticity”.

Recently, a student from Emmaus High School (EHS) run by Palau Evangelical Church (PEC), was suspended for a week due to his remark at a Mock Congress that marijuana should be legalized. Such act sparked an outcry that involved many of Palau’s political leaders.

The same Bill also seeks to legalize the use of Tetrahydrocannabinol for medical purposes, a natural chemical in marijuana that gives the user the “high” they are seeking.
