Ms. Rubie Gabriel studies coral recovery at Despedall for her internship with PICRC
Ms. Rubie Gabriel, from Palau Community College (PCC), has completed her internship with the Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC). In the past three months Ms. Gabriel has been working for PICRC to complete her internship and field study course, two requirements for PCC. During her time at PICRC Ms. Gabriel interned under the guidance of PICRC Researcher, Marine Gouezo. She conducted her research on coral recruitment rates on the outer reefs of Palau following typhoon Bopha and Haiyan.
On Thursday, May 4th, Ms. Gabriel concluded her internship with a presentation on her research project that she presented to PICRC and PCC staff along with PCC classmates. Through her research, Ms. Gabriel found coral recruitment is much higher on the western outer reefs than it is on the eastern outer reefs. Ms. Gabriel determined coral recruits are in competition with bryozoans, a type of marine invertebrate, and if the eastern reefs do not receive enough coral larvae they will be outnumbered by these highly competitive invertebrates.
Ms. Gabriel is currently completing her degree with PCC in Environmental/Marine Sciences. Upon graduating, Ms. Gabriel will go to Hawaii where she has been accepted as an intern for a Research Experience for Undergrads (REU) program through the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. This is a great opportunity that will offer Ms. Gabriel even more hands-on experience and provide an excellent transition in to college. In the coming fall, Ms. Gabriel will begin a four year degree in Biology at Eastern Oregon University.
PCC President, Dr. Patrick U. Tellei, presented a $1,500 check to PICRC for hosting Rubie over the past three months. We are very grateful for our longstanding relationship with PCC and fortunate to work with their motivated students, aspiring to make a difference. We hope together we can have a lasting impact on these students and inspire them to return to work in Palau one day.
